The Writer’s Life: Friday Check-In #4 & War in Resolution Galaxy-Episode 4

War in Resolution Galaxy

Previously in …War in Resolution Galaxy (#3), the EVOLVE Empire warriors special forces division were tired from all their training and fighting.  They were worried that exhaustion, illness and lack of creativity were going to cause a loss for the EVOLVE Empire against the STASIS Republic. The commander ordered them to rest and recuperate and taught them it was an important part of their training.

“Commander, we are rested and ready to resume the battle!”

“Recruits, you are not yet prepared.  It is time for some good hard PLAY!”

“What? We don’t have time. We are rested and strong.  Look at all the other EVOLVE warriors out there fighting. We must defend Darwin Vader and the EVOLVE Empire from any more losses.”

“You are part of the elite EVOLVE warrior special forces division. You are in this war for the long-haul.  Look closer at those warriors out there, getting blasted and blown to smithereens because they are mindlessly impulsive and distracted.  They are battling the STASIS Republic by leading with their minds and wills.”

“Yes sir, but shouldn’t we do that too?  We need to be strong, controlled and focused.”

“I agree we must be strong, controlled and focused, but you must learn the secrets of the Force that will give you indestructible powers and lifelong change. EVOLVE warriors will always lose when they employ tactics that lead with the mind and will. Look out them blasting at anything that moves, you are watching beginner mistakes.”

“Commander, we are anxious to learn the wisdom of the Force.  What shall we do?”

“As I said, it is time to PLAY! The Force must have an open channel within you to flow freely and grow stronger.  First, you must learn to rest and play without straying.  Do not become distracted by all that is yet to be done and by the threats of destruction.  When you return to continue your training and resume the battle you will be much more passionate and powerful warriors.”

Listen to Your Broccoli

With #writerlbsOff in full swing, you may think this has to do with eating better, but no, it is not about nutrition, but rather intuition. I thought it would be a great cross of all our interests – writing better & living better.

I have been reading Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life, by Anne Lamott. It is a great book with advice from the classes that she teaches about how to become a better writer and how to manage the highly emotional and sometimes rocky life of being a writer.  Anne Lamott is a humorous and insightful writer. Her lessons are easily digested with her honest, realistic and wacky view of the writer’s life.

I was inspired by her insightful chapter, simply entitled, Broccoli.  It begins…

There’s an old Mel Brooks routine, on the flip side of the “2,000-Year-Old Man,” where the psychiatrist tells his patient, “Listen to your broccoli, and your broccoli will tell you how to eat it.”  And when I first tell my students this, they look at me as if things have clearly begun to deteriorate.  But it is as important a concept in writing as it is in real life.

It means, of course, that when you don’t know what to do, when you don’t know whether your character would do this or that, you get quiet and try to hear that still small voice inside.  It will tell you what to do.  The problem is that so many of us lost access to our broccoli when we were children.  When we listened to our intuition when we were small and then told the grown-ups what we believed to be true, we were often either corrected, ridiculed, or punished.

Anne Lamott is talking about the importance of intuition and being open to it in the writing process and in our lives. This may take conscious effort as adults if we have had our intuition shut down by past experiences in childhood or as adults.  Sometimes we close it down ourselves and favor the hard-core intellectual activity and multi-tasking that is so popular today in the work environment.  Our society and educational systems have been quite busy beating the creativity out of us in favor of more “productive” modes of operating.

Anne Lamott continues…

You get your intuition back when you make space for it, when you stop the chattering of the rational mind.  The rational mind doesn’t nourish you.  You assume that it gives you the truth, because the rational mind is the golden calf that this culture worships, but this is not true. Rationality squeezes out much that is rich and juicy and fascinating.

Sometimes intuition needs coaxing, because intuition is a little shy.  But if you try not to crowd it, intuition often wafts up from the soul or subconscious, and then becomes a tiny fitful little flame.  It will be blown out by too much compulsion and manic attention, but will burn quietly when watched with gentle concentration.

So try to calm down, get quiet, breathe, and listen…

I think a major step in learning to rely on your intuition is to find a usable metaphor for it.  Broccoli is so ridiculous that it works for me.  A friend says that his intuition is his animal: “My animal thinks this,” he says, or “my animal hates that.” But whatever you come up with needs to suggest a voice that you are not trying to control…. You have to stop directing, because you will only get in the way.

Listen to your broccoli. Maybe it will  know what to do.

Intuition

How would you describe your intuition or your muse? I would love to hear about it in the comments as part of your update.

When I thought about my intuition/muse, the first image that jumped forth for me was a squirrel.   I see squirrels as highly energetic, wild, crazy –  running, jumping, climbing.  I see their concentrated effort when preparing for winter.  They have a quiet, cute nature when eating a nut. They are so cute when they play.  Sometimes squirrels are calm enough to come up to us and take food out of our hands.

And, squirrels can be ornery, naughty, mischievous & the most frustrating animals on Earth if you try to control them. They are clever and totally unpredictable.  You can’t tame them, cage them or control their behavior.  A squirrel fits the description of my state of consciousness on most days.  The metaphor helps me because I can immediately get into a state of not trying to control my intuition/muse when I see it as a squirrel.  I must only watch, listen and accept the antics of my squirrel. If I am still and quiet, the squirrel is more likely to come near.

So, I will Listen to My Squirrel.  That is why I need lots of nuts in my life:))

  1. Bonjour tout le monde (I’m learning French, can you tell?) Nice to catch up on everyone’s progress and Anne, your posts are always wonderful. You put so much work into it, I’m in awe and inspired.

Health-wise, I had an okay week. I’ve lost a total of 5 pounds since starting two weeks ago. I had lost 7, but felt a tremendous need for pasta and I gave in the craving. I can’t say I regret it because those occasional treats are necessary to keep me going long-term. I also got a little more exercise in this week. I sneak that in because I hate doing it. I snuck it in via a lovely bike ride. The weather is beautiful right now in Phoenix, so biking is more like fun than anything else. Butt hurts today though… does anyone make a comfortable bike seat???

Writing went well. I did some everyday and when I sat down to write, I actually wrote. Didn’t just surf the web or play pathwords on Facebook. I’m still struggling with working on more than one piece at a time, but I guess that’s my cross.

Wow, I really just rambled. Sorry about that! ~ Olivia

    1. Hi Olivia,

Bonjour! Comment t’allez-vous, aujourd’hui? Je suis tres bien. That’s about all I remember, I need to get back to my French studies too.

I agree, the occasional treat does us good, and helps with long term change. Enjoy that great weather! Some of us, me, would love to get just one day of that right now.

I have heard of more comfortable bike seats. I followed this family that spent a year on their bikes traveling around. They had a source for great bike seats, here are some examples of the sheepskin you can also get foam padding to go with that, and I see a link to the larger seats with gel on that Amazon page also. I have seriously considered the sheepskin and foam!!!

  2. Well, I do have something good to report this week. I currently don’t have a scale in my house (to be remedied this week, as I need the motivation of visible progress), but I do seem to have lost about half an inch off my body measurements. For not really doing anything this month, I consider that a decent accomplishment.

    1. C.L.,

That is great to make progress without really trying! And, aren’t the inches more fun than just losing pounds?

  3. I love your weekly posts, Anne – keep up the good work! I’m actually doing pretty good on the balance part of my objectives – i’m taking a bit of time to just purely relax. My son’s sleep schedule is starting to return to (somewhat) normal, so that’s a big improvement. Now if we can get everybody healthy (colds are making their rounds now!). More good news is that i’m halfway to my weight loss goal – i only had a 10lb objective, but so far so good! 🙂

    1. Thanks PJ, I’m glad you like the posts.

Taking time to purely relax is a major accomplishment unto itself! And, congrats on the weight loss!

I am dreading the next round of colds & ickies from school – last fall was a nightmare of constant illness. Hang in there.

  4. Nicely done. I love satire.

    1. Thanks for stopping by and reading!!

  5. Ooh, I like that squirrel mix thing. I’m going to get the ingredients today. So glad to know another person who likes to eat quinoa as hot morning cereal!

    PARTY, PARTY, PARTY.

    1. Then I’m sure you know the secret of quinoa – a complete protein! And, if you add dry fruit, a little rice milk or a dash of agave – you have quite a morning treat! For anyone who wants a great sweetener alternative – I highly recommend Agave – really tasty and low glycemic – totally natural.

  6. Sorry I didn’t get my update up first. My week has gone much better than last week. My pain is reduced and I was able to get much more writing done. But now, all my posts are going up this weekend, so I hope you all won’t get tired of me calling you all back, again & again.

I came up with the brilliant idea (at least I think so) of celebrating the completion of each month in our #writerlbsOff group with a party. The first party would hit this Sunday. And, I thought a spa day party would be perfect. We can have fun, relax, and recuperate from our January full of drama, pain, and post-holiday blues. And we can celebrate all the accomplishments we have managed in spite of the life events. We need to celebrate our great community and all the support we have given each other.

My exercise has increased this week, but very slowly so as not to flare the pain back up. Still too cold to get outside, so yoga/stretching, light weight-lifting and mild aerobics are my usual.

I have put some time in on my new family memoir project and it brings me great joy! I want to capture all my family stories on paper, well digital paper, for my kids to have. Both my parents have died and I wish I had more of their stories.

I am concentrating the diet improvements on veggies at the moment. I am searching and trying new recipes that the entire family will like. I really want to find great dark green veggie recipes to boost our nutrients. I have a few good spinach recipes that even the kids will eat.

Since it fits my theme: I will share with you a recipe that I created to boost protein and nutrients in food. It also helps maintain blood sugar and keep the hungers away, it is called Squirrel Mix:

I take various amounts of flax seeds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds (I think that is all, depends on what I have around) and then I blend them – trying not to make nut butter – just coarsely-do flax seeds first since they are small. Then store in a tight jar-do small batches to keep fresh. We use this mix to add to yogurt, morning hot cereal (like quinoa)and to anything else we think it might be good in. Enjoy.

  7. I needed this, especially on a Friday! I don’t take the time to play.
Weight – still holding steady, so at least not gaining. 🙂
My muse is a mischievious small girl with gold eyes who plays in a dumpster when she doesn’t want to work. She knows that I’m afraid of what lives in there so I won’t come get her.

    1. Hi Laura,

Let’s all take time to play this weekend!!!

LOL! Your muse sounds very interesting! I like the gold eyes, but she must be a little smelly at times. She sounds like someone you definitely couldn’t control, and a little scary.

  8. Thank you for including the passages from Anne Lamott’s Bird by Bird. I have been waiting to buy this book and now I know I really should!

I think that my Muse is actually myself. But the “me” that was comfortably in touch with the intuition that made everything easily creative. Then, the more adult life pushed that intuition to the back of the closet because there were too many other rules and regulations that had to be followed.

While I have been careful in making sure that I eat in a healthy way, I have trouble at night. Ice cream.

    1. HI Marisa, yes, Bird by Bird is a must own. I got it from the library after someone on Twitter recommended it. But it is so good and I want to keep re-reading passages, that I now must buy it.

I hear ya on all the rules and regulations of adult life! It’s time to take back our true selves!

Oh, ice cream monsters, they can get very mean at night.

  9. Hello peeps!

I think I forgot to check in last Friday – oops, my apologies!
But I had nothing to report – it was a heavy work week and I didnt make it to the gym (I can’t blame work for this, I’m just awful at getting up in the mornings!). Food-wise I didn’t do too badly at all, but my weight didn’t budge an ounce.

This week has been a bit better and a couple of pounds have had the good manners to vacate the premises as they have certainly overstayed their welcome!

Got to be careful this weekend to not put those two pounds back on, and also I have to ramp it up a bit exercise-wise too!

I hope everyone had a good week!

    1. Glad to see you! I think several of us were really busy last week! Sounds like you are coming along fine!

I wish my extra pounds were as well-mannered as yours.

  10. It has been a very chilly week here in the Midwest and it has put a damper on my walks outside. (love to walk outside for the beauty and the creativity that comes with it) However, I have had to resort to walking inside on the treadmill, which I don’t enjoy at all. The only thing that makes me want to do it is you, Anne. And each and every one of the friends I have made with #writerlbsoff. Of course, my promise to myself has much to do with it, but I think I may have made an excuse or two on a few of the days, had it not been for all of you. I have lost another 1 1/2 lbs. this week. A total of 13 lbs. all together since 1/1/10. I have much more to go. Thank you for the support, friends.

Anne, I love the characteristics of the squirrel and I really wish that I could say that I am like one. BIG BUT, HERE, (no pun intended:-)) I used to be that energetic. I have slowed down, quite a bit. I really have to push myself and use all the discipline I can muster up to get things done. Thank goodness for lists and promises. LOL! My muse would probably take on the characteristics of a bear. Slow, methodical, cuddly and loves to hibernate in the winter.:-)

    1. Hi Cynthia, I wondered by your comment needed approval when you have already posted before – now I see, it is because you are using your alias – Cynthis Achuerr.

Wow! Your weight is melting off despite the arctic weather! That is quite a total for January! I’m glad the presence of the group has provided you with extra motivation. I know it has really helped me. That is what a community is all about!!

I’m with you on the energy outages at times, my muse is a squirrel, but my body is not. I like your image of the bear. That is perfect for our winters and they are so cute! I have a running storyline with my kids that I have told for…I think 2-3 years now about Brownie the Bear. We create stories about him, so I have good images of the bear. Brownie steals marshmallows from all the campers in the summer to have food while he is hibernating – yes, he eats all winter.

  11. War is very creative and obviously fun to write. Beats those chilly MN eves. Nice job.

    1. Thanks Michael, glad you like my silly self-help scifi!
