Become a Role Model of Creativity

by livewire on Mar.24, 2009, under Creativity

Once you have made the decision to develop more creativity in your life, you must also realize that the most powerful way for teachers to develop creativity in children is to role model creativity.

There are many ways teachers and parents can provide an environment that fosters creativity.  Children develop creativity not when they are told to, but when they are shown how.

The teachers most people remember from their school days are not those who crammed the most content into their lectures. The teachers most people remember are those whose thoughts and actions served as a role model. Most likely they balanced teaching content with teaching children how to think with and about that content.

I love this post. You are saying something I discovered after my first son was born and use successfully in homeschooling my three sons. Modeling is a powerful tool in teaching. If I want my sons to have manners, I use them myself. If I want them to be avid readers, I let them see me reading voraciously.

Modeling is equally powerful in terms of creative pursuits as well. I am a writer, and I work at home in my boys’ presence. My oldest is seven and is showing an increasing concern for use of language and the ideas he wants to convey. I attribute this at least in part to the fact that he seems me working on my own pieces. I also paint as a hobby. Last semester, I took my 7- and then 5-year-old to my night college classes so they could see me as a student in a learning environment. I was amazed at how their interest sparked when they could paint along with me in that setting and see me making my own creative choices.
